What your schools Didn't want you to know about Malcolm X

Did you learn ANYTHING about Malcolm X in school? If so, was it the full story? Join us on May 19th- Malcolm X Day- to honor his life and stories.

May 19th is Malcolm X's birthday, so join us in honoring his stories.

Attendees will learn about the people who influenced Malcolm X before and beyond Elijah Muhammad, including the specific books and experiences that shaped his development. This is important for educators, students and parents to understand by identifying what experiences our children must have in order to create another Malcolm X or thousands of Malcolm Xs.

This webinar will be led by Baba T'Shango, a master teacher and Malcolm X-pert! Baba T'Shango never liked school so he decided to do everything possible to make school more interesting and exciting for students. He is known for reshaping school culture and founding "Reawakening the Afrikan Genius Mind." Baba T’Shango has an extremely comprehensive understanding of Afrikan history and reads extensively, especially about Malcolm X (reading over 30 books on Malcolm X).

Talk, Touch & Listen While Combing Hair©

The Talk, Touch & Listen While Combing Hair© training is designed for experienced infant mental health and early childhood practitioners, and educators, as well as clinicians who practice with adolescents and their families. A strengths approach is used to incorporate observations of hair-combing interaction (HCI) between a caregiver and child, as an additional tool for assessment or as a brief intervention to strengthen caregiver-child relationships. These tools may be used with clients from a spectrum of racial, cultural and national backgrounds. Participants will learn the use of three HCI clinical tools. We present the findings from research on the hair-combing task as an opportunity for caregivers to talk, touch & listen while combing hair and strengthen their emotional relationship with their child. We discuss the sociocultural conceptual foundations of hair combing interaction including historical trauma and internalized oppression. Countertransference issues in the use of the HCI protocol by same race or different race practitioners are also discussed. to the training with use lecture, PowerPoints, experiential exercises (using the clinical tools participants can use with their clients), and guided practice analyzing video clips of hair combing. Finally, participants will be provided with next steps needed if participants seek to become certified in providing training in HCI Assessment Protocol.

Spring Meet & Greet with Dr. Marva Lewis

Meet and greet with the “Mother of Black Hair Psychology” to start off spring. Dr. Lewis uses culture-centered methods to prevent the intergenerational transmission of the legacies of the historical trauma of slavery such as the acceptance or rejection of children based on hair type and the practice of colorism (valuing light skin color over darker skin tones). She is interested in the prevention and reduction of child abuse and neglect while strengthening parent-child attachment through the everyday ritual and routine of the hair combing task plus community-based parent support. She recently published a book entitled, “Therapeutic Cultural Routines to Build Family Relationships: Talk, Touch & Listen While Combing Hair.”

PsychoHairapy January 2022 Book Club

Healthy boundaries. We all know we should have them--in order to achieve work/life balance, cope with toxic people, and enjoy rewarding relationships with partners, friends, and family. But what do "healthy boundaries" really mean--and how can we successfully express our needs, say "no," and be assertive without offending others?

Licensed counselor, sought-after relationship expert, and one of the most influential therapists on Instagram Nedra Glover Tawwab demystifies this complex topic for today's world. In a relatable and inclusive tone, Set Boundaries, Find Peace presents simple-yet-powerful ways to establish healthy boundaries in all aspects of life. Rooted in the latest research and best practices used in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), these techniques help us identify and express our needs clearly and without apology--and unravel a root problem behind codependency, power struggles, anxiety, depression, burnout, and more.
