Hairstylists and barbers, here is a timeline to help you to #TrimtheStigma of mental illness among clients and colleagues to create an environment of support, understanding, and awareness. Here's a suggested plan that focuses on education, creating a safe space, and promoting mental wellness:

Day 1-7: Education and Awareness

  • Day 1: Research - Spend the day gathering resources and information about mental health, focusing on understanding various conditions and how they can affect anyone.

  • Day 2: Training - Enroll in an online course or workshop about a mental health topic.

  • Day 3: Mental Health Kit - Prepare a mental health resource kit to have in the salon/barbershop, including local mental health support services, hotlines, and informative pamphlets.

  • Day 4: Team Meeting - Hold a meeting with all staff to discuss the importance of mental health awareness and how to approach sensitive conversations.

  • Day 5: Decor - Start to introduce subtle, supportive mental health messages and art around the shop to promote a positive and inclusive environment.

  • Day 6: Social Media Campaign - Post a social media campaign highlighting mental health awareness, using hashtags to increase visibility.

  • Day 7: Reflection - Dedicate this day to reflect on what you've learned so far and how you can personally make a difference.

Day 8-14: Creating a Safe Space

  • Day 8: Confidentiality Promise - Post a visible sign in the salon/barbershop assuring clients of their privacy and your commitment to confidentiality (unless potential harm).

  • Day 9: Conversation Starters - Place discreet, thoughtful conversation starters about general well-being around the shop.
